USD 231

The Gardner Edgerton Board of Education has narrowed its search for the next superintendent to three candidates. The candidates will be in the District on April 11, 12, and 13, 2022, respectively, to participate in various activities culminating with an interview in executive session with the Board. 

The next superintendent will officially begin on July 1, 2022. The USD 231 Board of Education and representatives from McPherson & Jacobson L.L.C. reviewed applicants on March 29. Select candidates were identified and invited to participate in the final activities. 

The finalists under consideration are listed alphabetically by last name and pictured above:

Dr. Brian Huff
Dr. Brian Huff has 29 years of experience in education. Dr. Huff's career began with teaching middle school math and science for four years. Since this time, Brian has spent 25 years in school administration as an assistant principal, building and district activities director, principal, assistant superintendent, and associate superintendent of curriculum and instruction. Brian and his family spent three years in Jos, Nigeria, working at Hillcrest School as missionaries with the International Mission Board, where Brian was the middle and high school principal. Brian's last 15 years have been in the Raytown school district, where he was recognized as the Missouri State High School Principal of the Year in 2013. Brian has a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Southwest Baptist University, where he played football, a Master's Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Phoenix, and a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Kansas. Brian and his wife Beth have been married for 32 years and have six children and two grandchildren. 

Mr. Joe Sample
Mr. Joe Sample currently serves as the superintendent of Marais Des Cygnes Valley Unified School District 456 (Melvern, Kansas). Joe has 13 years of experience in public education, three of which were in the Gardner Edgerton School District. Mr. Sample began his career as a 7th-grade social studies teacher at Wheatridge Middle School. After three years, Mr. Sample was selected to be the assistant principal at Iola High School. Joe then transitioned to the lead principal position at Baldwin Junior High, followed by his first full-time superintendency in the Fort Larned Unified School District 495. Joe earned his Bachelor's Degree in History/Secondary Education and Master's Degree in School Leadership from Baker University. Mr. Sample then pursued and earned his District Leadership Licensure from Newman University. Joe is currently pursuing his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership Degree at Baker University and anticipates graduating in spring 2023. Joe is happily married to his wife Ashley, and together, they have four children (12, 10, 10, 8). 

Dr. Jaret Tomlinson
Dr. Jaret Tomlinson began his career in education as a high school business teacher and coach. Since Dr. Tomlinson's classroom teaching days, he has served as a high school principal, deputy superintendent, and superintendent of schools. Jaret volunteers on numerous boards to further his influence on the education community. Dr. Tomlinson holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management, a Master's Degree in Business Administration, Specialist in Educational Leadership, and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership was earned through Saint Louis University. Dr. Tomlinson is recently engaged to his fiancé, Deborah. Jaret has a daughter who is a junior pre-med student at the University of Oklahoma. His fiancé has a daughter in graduate school at the University of Missouri and working as the Director of the Lee's Summit Economic Development Council.

No action will be taken during these interviews. At the earliest, the Board of Education expects to make a final decision by the end of April 2022.
