GEHS Senior Earns Girl Scouts Highest Honor

GEHS senior, Laurissa McMillan-DePew, has accomplished an achievement that few ever do! Laurissa earned the prestigious Girl Scouts "Gold Award". The Gold Award is the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts of the USA, earned by Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts. Only 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award.

Laurissa, who is also a member of National Honors Society and Natural Helpers, dedicated over 100 hours to write and publish "We Are All Princesses", a book about body image and the associated mental health issues. In publishing the book, Laurissa's hope is to address body positivity in females, especially teenage girls.

Laurissa started work on the book in the summer of 2020 and through the development process learned about book design, print, and copyright. She shares that picking the title was the most difficult part.

Laurissa states "The world tells us that we all must look or act a certain way to be valued. My desire is that every girl realizes she IS a princess, and that our shape, size, background, or ability does not change this."

The book can be found HERE. Laurissa has also developed a website, which can be found HERE.

Congratulations on this major accomplishment!
