The USD 231 Nutrition Services department is excited to announce that FREE summer meals will begin on Monday, June 6!

We will be hosting a variety of dining options at Wheatridge Middle School from June 6 to July 28 (no service July 4 - 8). Meals at this site will be available for dining on site OR daily takeout. In addition, we will be offering weekend take-and-make meal kits for pickup on Thursdays. All meals are available for FREE to any child ages 1-18 regardless of residence or income thanks to the USDA’s federally-funded Summer Food Service Program.

As you may know, our team has been hard at work again this year to ensure that all of our community’s kids have had access to high-quality, healthy meals as we return to a more normal mode of operation. We’re excited to take the next steps this summer to see all of your smiling faces!

Here are the highlights of this summer’s meal offerings:

On-site or daily takeout lunches 

  • Available Mondays - Thursdays at Wheatridge MS (11am - 1pm)

  • Optional kid-less pickup registration of takeout meals will be provided soon

  • Full Garden Bar - including local produce! - and additional menu options available on site

  • No ordering ahead needed

Weekend take-and-make kits - including a weekly breakfast option - 

  • Available for pickup on Thursdays from 1 - 4pm in the Wheatridge MS cafeteria (sorry, we won’t be able to do curbside delivery this summer!)

  • Includes weekly breakfast options, fresh produce (featuring local farms!) and half gallon of milk.

  • Pre-ordering from our Nutrislice menu website is highly recommended to guarantee your choices and enjoy an expanded selection of items including:

    • Ability to select your milk choices (you can still select none!)

    • Automatic registration for kid-less pickup 

  • Watch for special July 4th and end of summer meal kit offerings!

Tell your friends and neighbors that online ordering is open NOW! (Yes, you can still pick up for each other as long as everyone has ordered ahead!) Never fear, if you don’t want to hassle with ordering online you can always show up the day of distribution and select from a limited availability of kits. Kid-less pickup registration also available on site.

How do we place an order for the take-and-make weekend kits? Please click here for a step-by-step tutorial of how to place an order. As a reminder, ordering will also be available on-site the day of service, but selections may be limited based on product availability.

Do we need to order ahead for the Monday - Thursday on-site meals? Nope! Just show up each day with your kiddos to dine on site or with/without them for takeout. The first time you do takeout, we will need you to complete a quick form that authorizes kid-less pickup for our program compliance. 

If we select meals for takeout on Monday - Thursday, are we restricted to the cold boxed lunches? Nope! We’ll have takeout containers available daily for all menu options. We’ll also frequently have unadvertised menu options as well. We’ll post these additional options - available in limited quantities - on our Facebook feed each week.

If we are ordering take-and-make weekend kits for multiple kids do we do multiple orders or just one order for all? We would prefer that all orders go under one child’s account name (but will take either way!). You will have the opportunity to list all children on the order on the checkout screen before submitting your order. So we can register for kid-less pickup and go grab the lunches each day Monday - Thursday. Then, after lunch service on Thursday, we can pick up our breakfast and weekend lunches, which we can order in advance. Is that right? Yes! That's exactly what we're offering. We know it's not as convenient this year, but we don't have as much latitude as we've had in the past two summers to bundle meals this year. We fully expect this will be our last summer of take-out or take-home meals as this was a pandemic response from the USDA. We're just excited to have these options available to our families to give a little more flexibility!

My work schedule won’t allow me to make it during the pickup window for the take-and-make weekend meal kits. I don’t have any neighbors or friends to ask to help out. Are there any alternative as these meals really helped my family during the summer. At this time, we are looking for other parents or community volunteers who are willing to partner with our working families or those without transportation during the day. As long as the parent authorizes someone else to pick up for their family, we can allow this! If you are in need of this service OR are interested in helping out another family or two, please complete the form at this link. We’ll match everyone up as best we can. Will all meal pickups be required at Wheatridge Middle School? Yes, Wheatridge Middle School is the only building that is eligible for this program this summer based on community eligibility requirements. All pickups and meals must be served from this location per USDA regulations. However, you do NOT need to live in Gardner or the USD 231 boundaries to participate in our program! Meals are available to all children ages 1-18.

Will you be offering curbside meal pickup on Thursdays from 1-4pm? Unfortunately, we don’t have enough team members on our staff this summer to offer curbside pickup. That was a huge, amazing operation the last two summers, but many of our team members have decided to take a well-deserved summer vacation. You will need to park your vehicle and come inside Wheatridge MS to pick up your take-and-make weekend meal kits. We’ll still have carts available to use if you have multiple kits!

I’ve never been to Wheatridge Middle School. How will I know where to enter the building? Where do we go once we get inside? All meals will be served from the Wheatridge MS cafeteria. The west lot (with the electronic school sign) is the best place to park and enter the building. We promise there will be plenty of signs and wayfinding tools to help you navigate this process. :)

My child has special dietary needs. Do you offer accommodations for this in your daily or weekly meals? Yes! If you have a physician’s authorization, we can offer a safe menu for your child. Please contact our office at nutrition@usd231.com or 913-856-2055 to discuss these options. If your child is enrolled in USD 231 and already on a Meal Modification plan during the school year, that documentation will carry over into the summer. Just let us know you’re interested!
