1:1 Initiative

1:1 Initiative Information Meetings for Parents of Incoming Freshman and Middle School Students

The 1:1 Initiative was implemented into the high school in January 2016 with great success. The middle schools were introduced to the Chromebooks early January 2017. This initiative is an instructional implementation to support increased access to digital devices in the classroom. With the support of our outstanding educators, the 1:1 program will provide a learning advantage for middle school students and help USD 231 continue to prepare our youth for the rapidly changing world.

The 1:1 Initiative not only provides equal learning for students but opens doors to unlimited educational and learning possibilities. With the implementation of the program, teachers are afforded greater opportunities and additional tools to enhance lesson plans, create collaborative project research, boost student engagement, and ultimately, prepare students to be college and career ready.

Parents of a middle school student are required to attend one Informational Meeting on the Chromebook Initiative. Incoming Freshmen will receive a Chromebook for the first time as well. Parents of these students will be required to attend an informational meeting prior to school starting in August unless they have already attended a meeting as part of the Freshmen orientation or because of a sibling.

All parents must attend an informational meeting. The meetings are brief but provide an overview of the program as well as responsibilities on the part of the student/parent.

Program Overview

To further enhance the learning environment for high school students, the Gardner Edgerton School District implemented a 1-to-1 technology program. The program is focused on ensuring students are college and career ready post-graduation. Known as the 1:1 Initiative, the move to individualized technology means students will have the advantage to learn at higher levels than ever before. This 1-to-1 website is dedicated to communicating important information regarding this program to families as well as the community.

The Learning Advantage

Gardner Edgerton instructional staff members are enthusiastic about incorporating a new 1:1 initiative into lessons and collaborative projects to enhance the educational environment for their students. This initiative is an instructional implementation to support increased access to digital devices in the classroom. With the support of our outstanding educators, the 1:1 program will provide a learning advantage for students and help USD 231 continue to prepare our youth for the rapidly changing world.

Over the past twelve months, a committee of administrators, teachers, and students researched strategies and best practices to implement a digital platform for curriculum. During the process, committee members met with leaders from other districts to examine the best approach to initiate the program and to what level of education to introduce the initiative. In addition to this research, a survey to district staff and students was conducted to help determine the classroom needs that would improve instruction through the enhanced use of technology. The District was able to fund the initiative in part from the 2012 Bond Issue, budgetary planning and reallocation of resources.

Based on the information gathered and careful consideration of available devices, the 1:1 Committee selected Google Apps for Education and the Dell Chromebook. This fall, all high school teachers received a Dell Chromebook to begin preparation for classroom lessons and projects, and students began using Google Apps for Education in preparation for Chromebook use.
