Special Programs & Activities
Carnival – This annual activity sponsored by PTO is designed for family oriented games and activities which are operated by parents and teachers.
Character Education – The twelve pillars of character (Self-Control, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Compassion, Citizenship, Cooperation, Acceptance and Tolerance, Perserverance, Integrity, Patriotism, and Trustworthiness) are defined, practiced and recognized as traits for success in partnership with the Gardner community.
Choir – Fourth grade students have the opportunity to participate in the school choir. The choir sings at special events at school and in the community.
Community Service – Students are offered numerous opportunities through out the school year to offer their talents and resources to support community needs.
Field Day – Each May a day is set aside for friendly participation activities which involve many of the motor skills taught throughout the school year in PE class. Students rotate through various stations with the assistance of many parent volunteers.
Field Trips – Each class participates in an extension activity away from the school campus which enhances the grade level curriculum.
Guided Reading – Students are given the opportunity to read in small groups at their instructional level.
Johnson County Parks and Recreation - JCPR offers before and after school care on the Sunflower site. Call the registration office at 913-831-3355 for more information.
KU reading Program – Students in grades 2-4 receive a certificate and silver medallion for reading 12-24 books and a certificate with gold medallion for reading 25 books or more.
Mathletics – This problem-solving event for third and fourth graders promotes a group approach to solving mathematical problems. These competitions are held after school during the year.
Meet the Teacher Night – An evening event is held prior to the first day of school to allow our students and their families to bring school supplies to school and to meet the classroom teacher.
Music Performances – Grades one through four participate in an evening musical performance on stage at Wheatridge Middle School once each year.
Novel Navigators – This enrichment program encourages third and fourth grade students to read outside the traditional curriculum. It culminates in a competition allowing students to show mastery of comprehension of the extra-curriculum reading.
Parent Teacher Organization – This group meets regularly to support the mission of our school. Many activities promoted by the organization provide parent leadership opportunities within this volunteer program.
Project Plus – This math program provides additional teacher support for individuals, small groups, or large groups to increase mastery of math benchmarks.
Reading Support - This reading program provides additional teacher support for individuals, small groups or large groups to increase mastery of reading benchmarks.
Spelling Bee – Four qualifying students in each classroom in grades 3 and 4 compete annually in an all-school Spelling Bee. The school winner advances to the county competition.
Spirit Day – Students are asked to show school pride by wearing a school logo shirt or by wearing our school colors.
Student Council – This student elected group of students in grades.... are active in planning our community service and promoting school unity.
Sunflower Summer Reading Program - Students are provided with a list of suggested reading titles for summer reading that are appropriate for each grade level. Students that read 15 books over the summer are rewarded with a reading celebration event.
Talent Show – The Music Department hosts a talent show to showcase individual talent within the Sunflower student body. Each student is asked to perform a talent for his/her class. Individuals are selected from that talent pool to perform for the entire school.
