Staff Awards
Husband and wife teacher team Phillip and Susan Thies received a $2,000 ING Unsung Heroes Grant, which will allow them to collaborate on a new project entitled: “Twenty First Century Reading: Everyone Exceeding Expectations”. Phillip teaches third grade at Gardner Elementary School, and Susan teaches Computer Technology at Nike Elementary School.
Their project will allow students at Gardner Elementary School to utilize an MP3 player and Language Audio Card Reader to improve their reading comprehension and fluency. GE students will read stories and record them on a computer, then download them to an MP3 player. The students will be able to take the MP3 player home so their parents can listen to them reading, and assist them to improve their reading skills.
The Language Audio Card Reader will benefit the district’s growing population of English Language learners, allowing these students to scan cards that will say words. The words can be recorded by students or teachers. The cards provide students with the correct pronunciation of words, and even allow them to record themselves pronouncing the word. The system provides immediate feedback, and allows students to practice fluency and comprehension at home.
The grant will help fund the purchase of MP3 players, which cost about $45 each. Mr. Theis says the $2,000 grant will allow him to purchase approximately 35 MP3 players and one Audio Card Reader, which costs $279.00.
Nike Custodian Dino Wise, Nike Secretary Layla Bryan, Nike Para Educator Nancee Rankin, and Communications Teacher Mariah Myers have all been chosen as Shining Star award winners. Each quarter, the district's Shining Star Award recognizes certified and classified staff members who go above and beyond to provide an exemplary level of service to students and staff.
