AEC Student Handbook
Thank you for inquiring and expressing interest in the Alternative Education Center. The purpose of the AEC is to provide an alternative environment and curriculum for students that are currently experiencing limited success in a traditional classroom setting and may be at-risk for graduation. The AEC offers a self paced, on-line curriculum that is enhanced by various written components.
The AEC is an extension of Gardner Edgerton High School. Students are required to pay GEHS fees. They are also expected to adhere to the expectations of the AEC student handbook. Some students attending the AEC have two diploma options. Each student may continue to work towards the 28 credit diploma required by USD 231 or, those eligible may elect to complete the 21 credit diploma required by the State of Kansas. If a student wishes to obtain a Basic Diploma, he/she will NOT be eligible for Qualified Admissions for the Kansas Scholar’s Curriculum. The Basic Diploma meets the state graduation requirements of 21 credits and is an option only for those accepted to the AEC.
The AEC day program has two sessions: 8:00 – 11:00 & 11:30 – 2:30. Sessions are assigned on an individual basis and are determined by need and availability. The guidelines for determining which session and number of sessions include the following, but are not limited to: the number of credits still needed for graduation, age, employment and/or special circumstances.
The AEC is located on the Nike Elementary School campus. The capacity of our program ranges from 24 - 28 students per session. Students are responsible for their own transportation and may participate in the regular school lunch program via Nike Elementary School.
All classes are aligned with Kansas Department of Education and USD 231 standards. Students must make formal application and complete an interview process prior to selection. The GEHS administration reserves the right to place students at the AEC based upon extenuating circumstances.
A message from the Lead Teacher
The Alternative Education Center is a school environment geared for non-traditional high school students continuing their success as students of Gardner Edgerton High School. With the ability to offer 2 types of diplomas, 21 or 28 credit diplomas, we can ensure that students will be able to obtain their life long goal of graduating from high school. Along with the reception of their diploma, we strive for general life conduct that will make each student an asset to society. Each year, the staff prepares to make students successful, knowledgeable, and persistent at achieving those goals that seem distant. Our pledge to the students of the Alternative Education Center falls nothing short of excellence and total commitment. We, at the Alternative Education Center, strive to provide all students the opportunity to reach high levels of success.
