Wellness Policy
(District Wide Policy)

The USD #231 Board of Education is committed to providing a school environment that enhances learning and development of lifelong wellness practices. To accomplish this goal K-12, a District Wellness Committee has been established.  The Committee has defined three initial goals it will implement district-wide:

Nutrition Education Goal

Families will be provided with information that encourages them to teach their children about health and nutrition, and to provide nutritious meals for their families.

  • Buildings will utilize building newsletters to provide information on a monthly basis.

  • Buildings will utilize the web page to provide information.

  • District web page will be utilized to provide information.

  • The District Wellness Committee (Chairperson Nichole Burnett, M.S., R.D., L.D.) will serve as the resource for information that is shared.

  • Public Relations Coordinator will provide information to The Gardner News.

  • The goal will be evaluated by keeping a folder of published information.

Physical Activity Goal

Physical activity will not be used or withheld as a punishment.  This guideline does not apply to extracurricular sports teams or to infractions directly related to recess, as a natural consequence (e.g. pushing on the playground.)

  • To evaluate the policy, the district will administer a pre and post questionnaire.  Results will be compared in graphs to gather baseline and trend data over a three-year period.

  • The goal will be evaluated in terms of progress toward the goal:  progress, limited progress and no progress.

Nutrition Standards for All Food Available on School Campuses during the School Day

Healthy food choices and non-food items will be included and encouraged for rewards in the classroom.

  • The District Wellness Commitee will provide teachers with resources listing alternatives to food choices and resources listing healthy food choices.

  • To evaluate the policy, the district will administer a pre and post Teacher and Student Questionnaire.  Results will be compared and graphed to gather baseline and trend date over a three-to-five year period.

  • The goal will be evaluated in terms of progress toward the goal:  progress, limited progress or no progress.
