Kansas State Reading and Math Assessments Season

Between February 17 and April 13, Gardner Edgerton USD 231 staff and students

will embark upon the 2010 Kansas State Assessment season. This is an important

time in USD 231, as state assessment scores are utilized to determine a school

district’s annual progress under the No Child Left Behind Act.

This year, students in grades 3-8 and selected high school students will take Kansas

State Assessments in math and reading. Students in grades 4 and 7 and selected high

school students will also take the state science assessment. (Note that high school

students take subject-based state assessments after they have completed the

appropriate coursework).

There are five scoring levels on state assessments: exemplary, exceeds standard,

meets standard, approaches standard and academic warning. The goal of No Child

Left Behind is to ensure that all students will be able to score at the meets standard

level or above by 2014.

School districts are in year nine of the NCLB testing cycle. Each year, the state sets

grade specific achievement goals for the reading and math assessments. School

districts that meet or exceed the state’s achievement goals have met Adequate

Yearly Progress or AYP. Over the past nine years, all USD 231 schools have met

or exceeded AYP goals for all students and subgroups of students.

Schools that excel on state assessments are awarded the State Standard of

Excellence. Schools that score in the top 5 percent among all Kansas schools

are awarded the prestigious Governor's Achievement Award.

Last year, Gardner Edgerton USD 231 schools achieved the State Standard of

Excellence in 74 out of 76 possible opportunities in reading and math. In addition,

four schools achieved the Governor’s Achievement Award.

Our district is tremendously proud of the tradition of achievement we have

established on the Kansas State Assessments. Only a select few Kansas public

school districts have attained similar results, placing Gardner Edgerton at the

forefront of academic improvement and advancement.
